Train Operations Coincide with Old Sacramento’s "Fall Harvest Days"
For three weekends in October, the California State Railroad Museum will bring its popular Spookomotive train “back to life” as part of Old Sacramento’s Fall Harvest Days. This annual event promises Halloween-themed fun, train rides, and family entertainment throughout the Old Sacramento Historic District. Spookomotive trains operate Saturday and Sunday, October 11-12, and continue the weekends of October 18-19 and October 25-26, 2008. All Aboard for Halloween!
These three weekends only, Spookomotive trains depart every hour on the hour, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., from the Central Pacific Railroad Freight Depot at Front and “K” Streets in Old Sacramento. The diesel-powered “Spookomotive” pulls the whimsically decorated train (crawling with spiders, cobwebs and cornstalks), staffed by—what else? —a “skeleton crew.” Crawl aboard for a fun-filled, 40-minute, six-mile roundtrip ride along the Sacramento River!
Nearby, the 100,000 square-foot California State Railroad Museum — America’s most popular — showcases a variety of engaging, special exhibitions along with the golden "Lost Spike" of Transcontinental Railroad fame, and “Small Wonders: The Magic of Toy Trains.” This whimsical yet informative exhibit highlights the extensive toy train collection of Mr. Thomas W. Sefton, which was recently donated to the Museum. Featuring a dazzling operating toy train layout and over 1,000 colorful, vintage toy trains in 3,300 square feet, this is America’s most comprehensive toy train exhibit!
Throughout Old Sacramento, Fall Harvest Days will be in full swing throughout October. Scarecrows and other fall décor will adorn window displays, boardwalks and streets. A spirited Scarecrow Park, Ghost Tours, children's activities, horse-drawn hayrides and special treats are all part of the fun. For more information, visit oldsacramento.com.
Spookomotive train tickets are $8 for adults, $3 for youths ages 6-17, children ages 5 and under ride free. Admission to the California State Railroad Museum—North America’s finest and most-visited—is $8 for adults, $3 youths ages 6-17, ages 5 and under free.
Operated by California State Parks with assistance from the nonprofit CSRM Foundation, the California State Railroad Museum at Old Sacramento State Historic Park is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Widely regarded as America’s most popular railroad museum, the complex includes the 100,000-square foot Railroad History Museum plus the reconstructed Central Pacific Railroad Passenger Station and Freight Depot, 1849 Eagle Theatre, and Big Four and Dingley Spice Mill buildings.
