Working on the Railroad: A Celebration of Sierra Railway Workers
11:00 am - 3:00 pm
Join us in Railtown as we recognize and honor the hundreds of current and former Sierra Railway, Sierra Railroad and Railtown 1897 SHP workers, their descendants and family members. The celebration will include special photographs, temporary exhibits throughout the Park, guest speakers, live music by the Black Irish Band and much more.
Designed to celebrate all the workers who built, maintained and operated the railroad, the special event will include a behind-the-scenes tour of the Historic Shops, Roundhouse, Warehouse and other areas with a focus on sharing information and interpretation about the workers who practiced their trades, their job duties and who they were as individuals and community members. A "Memory Wall" will be hung in the Carriage Room where Park visitors will be invited to post stories and photographs of past railroad workers that will remain in place long after the celebratory event is over. Tickets are free with regular Park admission: $5 for adults; $3 for youth ages 6-17; and free for children ages 5 and under.
In addition, steam train rides behind the "Movie Star Locomotive" Sierra No. 3 are available hourly that day from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and cost $15 for adults; $8 for youth ages 6-17; and free for children 5 and under (train ride tickets include Park admission). Members of Railtown and CSRM (Conductor, Engineer, Trainmaster & Spike levels) may participate for free!

Ongoing Tuesdays - 10am-noon - Behind-the-Scenes Shop Tours
Due to their popularity, weekly Behind-the-Scenes Shop Tours of Railtown 1897 State Historic Park are now available on Tuesday mornings on an ongoing basis! This is your chance to get an up-close look at routine maintenance and specialized work happening on current projects in the historic Roundhouse as well as in the Tri-Dam shop (a Cold War-era machine shop used to repair, replace or service parts for operating equipment, cars, steam and diesel locomotives). Keep in mind, parts for steam engines -- and sometimes vintage diesel locomotives -- cannot be purchased and must be manufactured on-site making Railtown 1897 SHP one of the most accessible places around to watch this specialized work being performed. After a brief slide show, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteer host will guide visitors to the historic shops to meet and ask questions of skilled paid and volunteer staff who are actively working on projects and activities that keep the historic shops alive. Mark your calendar to spend your Tuesday mornings joining the Shop Tours and watching this important work get done!
