Behind-the-Scenes Roundhouse Tours - 2nd Tuesday of each month
As part of this special opportunity, visitors will have the chance to get an up-close viewing of exciting repair work currently underway on Sierra No. 28, a historic "workhorse" steam locomotive.

Roundhouse Day - February 14
Come by and see what happens during the winter months to prepare the locomotive and cars for the operating season. A behind the scenes tour of the Roundhouse will be offered.
Opening Weekend for Excursion Train Rides - April 4 & 5
Arrive early at 7:00 am and watch the crew prepare the train for the day in the historic roundhouse. Grand opening festivities will be happening on both days. This weekend only, Calaveras, Mariposa and Tuolumne County residents ride trains for free (proof of residency required). NEW departure times for 2015: 10:30 am, 12:00 pm, 1:30 pm, and 3:00 pm. Steam engine will run on Saturdays and Diesel engine will run on Sundays, unless otherwise noted.
Wildflower Trains - April 11 & 18
Special afternoon Wildflower Train at 3:00 pm! After a short video presentation passengers will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with wildflowers of the Sierra Nevada foothills. Once on board the train, naturalists will answer questions and point out wildflower groupings along the way. Train departs at 3:30pm.
Special Book Signing - April 25
Special meet and greet with Barbara Hettwer, author of The Seamstress of Jamestown on Saturday, April 25. Hettwer will be at the Park from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm to talk with visitors and sign copies of her novel that was set in historic Jamestown in the late 1800s. A work of fiction that is immersed in history, The Seamstress of Jamestown will be also be available for purchase at the Depot Store.
Mother's Day - May 10
With beautiful wildflowers still in bloom on Mother's Day, treat mom to a train ride through the rolling Gold Country foothills. For those wanting to treat mom extra special, there will be a first-class car available as well. Complimentary commemorative chocolate bars to all mothers who take a train ride (while supplies last).
In addition to the train rides, there will be lots of fun, interactive and interpretive-related activities happening at the Park. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the sprawling Roundhouse lawn.
Amtrak Train Days - May 16
Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy steam-powered excursion train rides behind the famous "Movie Star Locomotive" Sierra No. 3, take behind-the-scene tours of the historic Roundhouse and Shops, and enjoy viewing a number of historic locomotives, equipment and vehicles along with the historic blacksmith forge that will be open and operating this day. In addition, popular historic track "speeder" car rides will be offered from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm and complimentary Amtrak goodie bags will be available to Park visitors (while supplies last). Regular Park admission and steam train ride costs apply for the special Amtrak Train Day community celebration.
"In Train View" Special Photo Exhibit - Opens May 16
An exhibition of 36 large format photographs showcasing the talent of the Sonora Photo Club. The exhibit will be on display May 16 through September 27, 2015. With close-ups, portraits, still-life images and shots of trains in action.
To introduce the new exhibit, Park visitors are invited to join the talented photographers for an opening reception on Saturday, May 16 at 11:00 am. The exhibit will remain on display through Labor Day weekend and the photographs will also be on sale, with proceeds benefiting the Park. Viewing the special "In Train View" exhibit and attending the opening reception are included in the regular admission to the Park.
Memorial Day Weekend - May 23-25
Regular excursion trains depart Saturday, Sunday and Monday over the holiday weekend. Steam operations on Saturday and Sunday, diesel on Monday. Also enjoy the opening weekend of In Train View, a Railtown 1897 State Historic Park photographic exhibit by the Sonora Photo Club in the Carriage Room. This exhibit continues through Labor Day. In addition to the train rides, there are lots of fun, interactive and interpretive-related activities happening at the Park, including:
- The Depot Store, historic Roundhouse & Shops, Interpretive Center and grounds will be open from 9:30am - 4:30pm with guided tours available
- Hands on History boxes on the deck where volunteers conduct "show and tell" activities and allow visitors to touch and learn about riveting , railroad signaling, track laying and more
- Historic caboose visits where guests can climb aboard a historic wooden caboose
- Visits inside the locomotive cab to get new and interesting perspectives of the Park and railroading
Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the Roundhouse lawn.
"Singing Rails" Music Festival - June 6
As long as there have been trains, there have been train songs to sing. An important part of the American Railroad experience. This family-friendly music festival will take place outdoors on the Roundhouse lawn from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and includes an amateur music contest with the Black Irish Band and the Sierra Mountain Band performing live in between contestants.
Father's Day - June 21
Special treats for dad aboard the train when accompanied by a child.
Wednesday Diesel Train Rides - July 1 - August 26
Enjoy mid-week train rides Wednesday's only during July and August.
Story Time in the Caboose - July 1 - August 26 (WEDNESDAY'S ONLY)
Volunteers will read a story in the Caboose at 12:00 p.m.
