Touring the Railtown 1897 SHP Grounds
Self-Guided Walking Tours of the Park provide an overview of the Historic Jamestown Shops and Roundhouse; complimentary maps are available at the Railtown Depot Store. Several points of interest are called out, including a movie prop area plus locations where guests can look into the Shops and Roundhouse. Please note that, for safety reasons, access to portions of the Shops and Roundhouse is available only as part of Guided Roundhouse Tours. Certain areas of the Park’s grounds are off-limits to the public at all times.
Guided Roundhouse Tours
Guided Tours of the Historic Jamestown Shops and Roundhouse are a highlight of any visit to Railtown 1897, and are free with park admission. Tour frequency is typically hourly between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. during the busy summer months; for the balance of the year, tour frequency depends upon the availability of volunteer Tour Guides. Call ahead for today’s Roundhouse Tour schedule.
Junior Ranger Program
The Junior Ranger Program is a statewide educational program for children age 7-12. The program offers a creative and educational, hands-on experience, and will engage children's interest and emphasize stewardship pertaining to California's rich history and environment within these parks. Badges, certificates and patches are awarded to participants as they progress through the program. Children are able to discover the rich natural and cultural heritage preserved in California State Parks through this exciting program. The Junior Ranger Program is included with the purchase of park day use, $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 6-17.
The grounds at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park are fully accessible to persons with disabilities. Certain exhibits and programs-including train rides-have limited accessibility, due to factors such as narrow, historic stairways and door openings on railroad passenger cars. A mobility lift is available and can accommodate chairs and walkers. The historic cars can accommodate chairs with widths of 28" and narrower, however, the park also has a transfer chair available. For the best possible service, give us a call before your arrival. For additional details, please contact us at 209-984-3953.
Pets are permitted on the grounds and on board the trains. Pets are required to keep their owners on a 6 foot leash at all times. We ask that dogs onboard the trains take the window seat. They like it better that way, and its easier on our train crew when they pass through the cars.
Offered weekends only, April-October, plus selected weekends November-December. See Train Rides for additional details.
Railtown 1897's Interpretive Center, located at the north end of the Railtown Depot, is open daily. Guided Roundhouse Tours are offered daily (see above).
