Bring your school group
to Railtown 1897!

The Sierra Railway shops and roundhouse at Railtown 1897 give your students a rare look back in time at an historic industrial worksite. Complete with operable steam and diesel locomotives, the roundhouse shows what was once the heart and soul of many medium-sized towns driving the development of agriculture and industry across the nation. Famous for its ties to the logging and mining industries, the Sierra Railway played a pivotal role in the development of California's infrastructure including the dam at Hetch Hetchy and many important structures and waterways. While everyday life has changed, students will experience many people, places, and things which have stayed the same.

Experience life in the heart of California's gold country with a 45-minute train ride on our historic passenger cars pulled by vintage diesel locomotives. Costumed Car Hosts are waiting for you onboard to interpret the history and sights along the ride.

Back at the park, our knowledgeable volunteers will interpret the history of steam locomotives, the railroad turntable, blacksmithing, specialty tools, and more. The multi-stop tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and is geared towards the fourth-grade California History curriculum. However, school groups of all grades and ages are welcome.

Advanced reservations are required for all school groups. Please call (209) 984-4408 or email us for additional information. Admission, including park entrance, train ride, and tour is free for California schools. Scheduling is subject to capacity limitations and equipment availability.
